We are pleased to welcome Open Stay Inc. and founder Karen Burland into the GB Accelerator’s Ideation Program.
Karen Burland is an entrepreneur and former financial professional whose career has been defined by bridging strategic planning with community-focused innovation. Following a successful tenure as a portfolio manager and financial planner, Karen is now applying her expertise in risk management to the real estate sector, developing a new concept to enhance transparency and confidence in the home-buying process.
Karen’s entrepreneurial roots run deep in the Collingwood area. As the founder of Happenings Party Rentals, she built a trusted local business. Her ability to turn a vision into a reality was most notably seen when she conceptualized the Collingwood Elvis Festival, managing the event through its first five years and laying the groundwork for what became a major cultural staple for the town.
Currently in the ideology and proof-of-concept phase, Open Stay is designed to bring greater clarity to high-value home purchases through a structured “try-before-you-buy” model. The concept introduces a conditional two-night stay following an accepted offer, allowing buyers to experience the home firsthand before finalizing the transaction. If the stay is favourable, the condition is removed and the purchase proceeds, providing greater peace of mind for buyers and sellers alike.
With plans to use the South Georgian Bay area as an initial test market, Karen and her team are focused on refining the legal and logistical frameworks to ensure this model supports buyers, sellers, and agents alike. Her goal is to transform the final stages of a real estate transaction into a more transparent, confident experience for everyone involved.
Over the coming weeks, Karen will be working closely with the GB Accelerator team to validate the model, strengthen the proof of concept, and determine the most effective path to market.
